Ioannina, is located next to the lake Pamvotis and has a population of 120,000 inhabitants. The first signs of human activity in the area date back to the Paleolithic era (38,000 years ago). This has been proven by the stone tools found in the Cave of Kastritsa. The city was founded in 528 A.D. by the Byzantine emperor Justinian.
